Option for those who like to hate

ā€˜Likeā€™ is the only option Facebook users have at present to express their opinion. But ā€˜Hateā€™ seems all set to give it company. According to a report in TechCrunch, a technology website, Facebook is considering introducing a ā€˜Hateā€™ button. It said, ā€œAccording to Facebookā€™s S-1 filing, users are now generating 2.7 billion Likes and Comments per day. With the Hate button, Facebook expects to at least double that.ā€ Interestingly, other buttons under consideration are ā€˜Mehā€™, ā€˜Loveā€™ and ā€˜Who Caresā€™.
Dr Mahima Nanda finds ā€˜Likeā€™ totally inadequate. ā€œI would certainly root for ā€˜Who Caresā€™ button as I donā€™t understand why people put up pictures of their children eating, sleeping, etc on Facebook. Also, whatā€™s the matter with lovey-dovey couples who constantly express their love to each other? Get a life. ā€˜Not Interestedā€™ is another option Iā€™d want Facebook to introduce.ā€
Some feel ā€˜Hateā€™ may be an extreme option, and would prefer something more neutral. Says Nabila Sadiq, a doctorate student at Jawaharlal Nehru University, ā€œHate is too extreme a word to be used as a button. As it is Facebook is filled with too many hate pages. But yes, itā€™s a nice experiment to give options to users. I would love to see a neutral button though, where you might care about the person and the views but choose to not like or hate it.ā€
Gautam Kumbargeri Srinath, regional sales manager with a private firm, agrees with Nabila and says, ā€œHate isnā€™t a good option as chances are high of it being misused. People are more open and expressive when they click ā€˜Likeā€™ button, but choosing ā€˜Hateā€™ might be perceived as an extreme reaction. But thank God, Facebook isnā€™t considering f*** you as an option.ā€

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapurā€™s Bandit Queen didnā€™t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karunā€™s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
