‘PeeCee deserves to be honoured’

One thing about Priyanka Chopra’s first international single, In my city, is that it might have got a mixed response back home, but people abroad seem to love it. That is why PeeCee has found a nomination in World Music Awards 2013.

Talking about Priyanka’s achievement, singer Naresh Iyer says that she has now reserved her spot with trailblazer like Pandit Ravi Shankar. “I have read so much about the song and I feel it is superbly done. She has made a great attempt and really deserves this nomination. But I would like to add that this is not the first time that an Indian has reached this level. We always had the likes of Zakir Hussian and Pandit Ravi Shankar, who were exemplary performers and took India to international arena. Probably this is the first time that somebody from Bollywood, or outside classical music fraternity, has come so far,” says Naresh.
The actress has been nominated under three categories — Best Debut, Best Song and Best Video. And her competitors are Rihanna, Lady Gaga and pop sensation Madonna.
Singer Shibani Kashyap says, “She is the only female Indian artiste to be nominated with performers like Gaga and Madonna. We have already got one Oscar, World Music Award is not too far as I feel Priyanka made a great debut.”
Going by the responses, Priyanka’s first collaboration with Will.i.am has been received well although many believe that she came this far because of her popularity and collaboration. Singer Abhijeet Sawant says in her her defense, “She has done a perfect job. I read the comments on her single and realised that she is getting brickbats for singing in English. In no way Priyanka is pleasing any particular section. We should just celebrate her achievement.”
According to many, Priyanka’s feat is going to inspire more singers to do well. “It is a great feeling to be nominated in the categories ruled by Western singers. It is a happy moment for all of us and it is certainly going to inspire and motivate other singers,” says Naresh.
Abhijeet adds, “By and large, Priyanka has proved to be the only Indian artiste to sing so well in English and I am hoping she becomes a big pop star some day. I was surprised when I heard the song because I had heard her sing before once during a stage show. She sounded so different then, now she sounds completely different. Being a non-singer, she has come a long way.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
