‘People don’t know who the real Mary is’
She features on the cover of almost every magazine these days. Still boxer Mary Kom says the real recognition has come her way now. A nomination for Padma Bhushan is more special than any other award for the Manipuri pugilist who got the honour of Padma Shri in 2006.
“It was a surprise for me and my family. There were so many good performances in other sports, not only in boxing. And it never occurred to me that I’d be chosen for this award. I am cherishing it like an honour because this is the first time somebody from my state (Manipur) is getting this award,” says Mary, who feels that the honour will inspire her to do even better. “Such honours and recognitions are really important in my profession as they motivate us to give our best,” adds the boxer.
Mary, who is enjoying her winter break for now, feels she has spent enough time in the limelight. “I had a very busy schedule after the Olympics and it was particularly hectic under the flashlight. Now I have decided to take a break and spend more time with my family, especially my twin babies. I am not taking any more assignments now,” says Mary.
Apart from the Padma Bhushan, Mary is excited about the upcoming film on her life by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Says Mary, “People don’t know who the real Mary is or what her dreams and aspiration were. I am sure the movie will throw light on all these points and inspire youngsters.”
“I never had a specific choice for the lead, but I wanted somebody fit to play me on screen. Boxing is a strenuous game! I am happy with the director’s choice,” says Mary, referring to Priyanka Chopra.
