Photography, a collegiate passion
Spotting a bunch of youth taking pictures of their friends in malls or metro stations is no big deal. Thanks to smartphones and a connected generation, photos are their daily feeds to their Face-book accounts. But there are a few who are focussed on trying to get better with every shot.
Abhinav Kakkar of Ramjas College, who began photography only 10 months ago, has already won first prize in India and third globally in a competition organised by the Delhi Photography Club. He is a core member of the Delhi University Photogra-phy Club and organised a photo exhibition last year in the college. Besides, he has convinced the college principal that in the 2013 admissions, the college must include photography in the extra-curricular quota. “We are running a group that gives young shutterbugs an opportunity,” he says.
This fever has spread across Delhi University, with many colleges running dedicated photo teams. Most clubs organise photo walks every weekend, with the members capturing and refining their work. “We also plan to bring all the photo societies under one roof and work in cohesion,” says Vaibhav Bhardwaj, president, Clicks, DCAC.
Besides, there have been attempts to take photography to those who have not been influenced by it so far. Dr Satendra Singh, coordinator, Enabling Unit, UCMS (DU), is soon organising a photo workshop for blind students. “The workshop will help students capture something they have only imagined,” he says.
