Portrait of a family

It’s quite a paradox how three generations of artists from the same family have a strikingly different palette and approach to art. Three Generations, an art exhibition by the Choyal family of Udaipur, was recently inaugurated at the Lalit Kala Akademi in the city is an example of the same. The journey at the gallery begins from a 62-year-old “wash” painting by the doyen, P.N. Choyal, recreated by him with a contemporary bent. A senior exponent of the wash genre of paintings that was developed in pre-Independence India to counter British art is one of the centers of attraction here.
His legacy is ably carried forward by his son, Shail Choyal, whose art is basically related to lord Krishna and his philosophies while Shail’s wife, Surjeet Kaur’s artworks deal with photo-realism and comment on socio-political issues and antiquity. The third generation of Choyal family sees P.N. Choyal’s daughter-in-law, Charul Choyal, whose artworks encompasses her journey from theatre to painting. Grandson Akash Choyal’s art sees different mediums brought together on the canvas and fiberglass. Technically, Akash’s base too lies in miniature paintings the credit for which goes to a special tool in his repertoire. “I use a special brush for Rajasthani miniature. In Udaipur alone this brush is the backbone for thousands of artists’ livelihood. On it the ink stays longer and one can explore lot more possibilities with the existing commonly-used brushes,” he said.
The three gentlemen from the Choyal family are all recipients of the National Award by the Lalit Kala Akademi and the contrasting, but equally brilliant aspects of art by the women-folk from the family holds fort to create an fantastic mélange of colours.
The exhibition is on till December 28 at the Lalit Kala Akademi

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
