Power Shoulders
Imagine a petite Hollywood hottie Jessica Alba shimmering in a sheath with exaggerated shoulders. Well, she can carry off almost anything, but for lesser mortals like us, there is a way to wear this huge trend that has swept global catwalks.
Whether garishly overdone or delightfully playful, bold shoulders have taken centerstage. In some collections they have been exaggerated to a virtually unwearable extent, but on many reed-thin beauties they have been reinterpreted and the high street is buzzing with wearable prêt ensembles.
Big shoulders are fun and reminiscent of the 80s. They are tailored and constructed or the volume is draped around the shoulder. “The focus is kept by re-emphasising them with decorative elements like shoulder badges,” says style guru Sanchita Ajjampur.
Though from Alexander McQueen to Chanel everyone seems to be lovin’ this trend and designer Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor explain that they have a Victorian inspiration. “Though the feel would be vintage but yet this technique will be modified thus to suit modern day need,” said Arjun.
Masculine tailoring with a feminine twist is a strong trend this season. The exaggerated shoulders goes down memory lane to the days when Diane Keaton’s androgynous look was a rage. “It’s the new kind power dressing for women that has emerged providing them with an alternative to the classic work suit. Pinstriped and herringbone check (plaid) suiting, tuxedo jackets, trench coats, waistcoats (vests), crisp collared white shirts with shoulder pads, and neckties are key pieces for this season,” says Ratik Sheth, who is the owner of the retail store Trunk in Colaba.
And even if you don’t have the voluptuousness of diva Beyonce or the sleekness of mom-to-be Posh Spice, you can work this trend to your favour by flaunting those skinny jeans with wild hair, red lips and of course, a million dollar attitude.
