In praise of Kahlo
Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo de Rivera met with an accident early in her life that left her with major injuries. Using her pain as a source of inspiration she painted magnificent paintings. Come August 16, her pain, fiery personality as a communist and love for life will come alive in the solo performance of Netherlands-based Indian Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer, Kalpana Raghuraman.
“My artistic journey started with Bharatanatyam and evolved into choreographing modern dance works. Bharanatyam has provided me a fertile ground in this evolution. In my works one can see references to Indian dance forms,” says Kalpana.
She will also take a workshop on how to better communication with one’s body so as to make it a companion.
Being a classical dancer, who also works in modern dance productions, does she find it difficult to synchronise both? “When performing in ‘traditional’ works one needs a different approach than in ‘modern’ works. In former, having deep knowledge of technicalities is vital to make a performance outstanding. For the latter, one needs to let go of certain programming and constructs that one has learnt,” she says.
