Proud desis to shun US goods
From ‘I love NYC’ tees to flag-emblazoned merchandise, we proudly flaunt our retail pleasures from the US. In the first place, the American economy burst into a flourish thanks to the globe chasing the American dream and even liberally lending support to the many brands (fast food, automobiles, creative establishments and even hospitality). But things seem to be all set for change. As protectionist president Obama pushed for the ‘Buy American’ Bill, the world watched in anger. On our own shores, the bill has been met with contempt.
In his guise as saviour, Obama has displayed a ‘blinkered’ view, say many youth. Keshav Kaushal, an IT whiz offers, “We should say no to foreign goods and support Indian retail. Our quality is now at par with international standards.â€
Research also reveals that Indians are the largest spenders on consumer electronics, some of which are made in the US (Apple gadgets). Sweta B., a dental student, says, “Our stars are busy signing up as brand ambassadors for international brands. It would be nice if Aishwarya Rai endorses desi cosmetics.â€
With the US economy suffering, it’s the developing countries that seem to be contributing to a major chunk of their revenue. Danseuse Madhu Natraj says, “America prides itself on being a multi-cultural and inclusive nation and this goes against their own principles. It’s time we start valuing our money and spending it on indigenous goods.â€
