Punjabi rap rocks B’town

Honey Singh is on a new high. His Punjabi rap had understandably won him a fan base in Punjab and Delhi, but the singer was pleasantly surprised recently when he got an invite to sing for a Tamil movie, and found Bengalis swinging to his numbers during Durga puja in Kolkata.
It has been an incredible journey, confesses Yo Yo Honey Singh, the singer famous for his numbers Brown Rang, Dope Shope and Angreji Beat from the movie Cocktail. “I was really surprised when Dhanush approached me for a song for one of his Tamil films. I never expected people in the South to know me or be interested in my voice. Also, at a Durga puja pandal in Kolkata this year, I was amazed to see people singing along to my songs. Obviously, I feel very blessed,” says Honey Singh.
While performing tracks from his latest album Satan at Lemp Brewpub & Kitchen in Gurgaon, Honey Singh shared that he is not a Punjabi singer originally. “I used to sing in English. Then the audiences started requesting me to sing in Punjabi, so I switched to Punjabi rap. I am more of an independent person who likes to do his own things, his own way and at his own time,” he adds.
“After the success of Angreji Beat, I sang Rani mein tu raja (Son of Sardar), Kikli Kaleer Di (Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana), Lonely (Khiladi 786). And then Bohra Brothers approached me to sing for their upcoming movie Mastaan. I had initially asked for `1 crore, but the deal finally got locked at `70 lakh. I also have a short role in the movie.”
Honey Singh will also be seen in his second movie Tu Mera 22, Mein Tera 22 and is doing dance tracks for Race 2 and Jatt Airways.
