In the ‘race’ for super success

Just a month before she turns 26 in January, Deepika Padukone has already made waves with many BO hits. It’s been only six years since her Kannada debut with Aishwarya, but Deepika Padukone has come a long way with a bagful of upcoming films like Race 2, Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and more in her kitty.

She’s on a roll now and why not. “I think 2012 was a great year for me, thanks to Cocktail. And yes, hopefully 2013 looks even better. There are four films that I am working on and each of them is so different from the other, especially the directors I am working with and the roles I am working on. I can’t wait for all of them to release and see how they turn out,” says Deepika in anticipation.
With such frenzied schedules, we wonder if she gets time to meet her folks back home. She states, “I miss my family a lot, but because I live in Mumbai and they live in Bengaluru, we can’t meet very often. And my schedule is such that I cannot even take off on long holidays now. Whenever they can, my sister Anisha and parents come to Mumbai to see me.” Adding that she’s busy even on New Year’s, she says, “I have no plans even when the world parties. I’m working through New Year’s and the next six months will be full of work too.”
Ask her about the rumours over alleged affairs with both Ranbir and Ranveer, and she retorts, “It’s weird that people are making so much of it. I guess when you are doing a love story and you are seen spending time together, one would naturally assume that there is something more to it. We had to do a lot of workshops to prepare for the role; it requires a lot to play a different character. I have my hands full, right now, with different projects and have no time for anything else.”
And about shooting with Shahrukh, Deepika says, “Yes, we are shooting for Chennai Express and it’s great to get back with him.” Conveniently brushing away any tags associated with Sid Mallya, she adds, “He’s just a good friend.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
