Raid alert makes rave crave wane
DJ Ashish Nagpal would like to thank his stars for missing out on the alleged rave party in Mumbai that was busted recently. “I was asked to attend the rave party but due to my tight schedule and an early morning flight I couldn’t,” he says. As the bust made it to the headlines Nagpal was relieved that he didn’t attend the party.
With a few IPL cricketers and celebrities getting detained after the bust, there has been a lot of hullabaloo about rave parties. Defined as all night party, a rave party is designed to enhance a hallucinogenic experience through music and lights. And most often, drugs are involved too. While such adult parties are popular among the young and the elite in metros and popular holiday destinations like Goa and Manali, party hoppers in the capital assert that many in the city have of late started treading on the side of caution, resulting in a sharp ebbing of rave parties.
Says socialite Salloli Kumar, “Delhi is less prone to adult rave parties. Due to lack of space and too much restriction around the capital, event organisers don’t risk hosting such parties.”
However in NCR, it’s different. “I have played at a few rave parties held at Gurgoan. Also places in the hills such as Manali and Kasauli, are considered to be popular venues for rave parties,” says a city-based DJ. He adds, “The revellers consume drugs such as Lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly referred to as LSD, cocaine and Ecstasy. But regular party hoppers follow a very strict code of secrecy to buy drugs,” he says.
With psychedelic trance music played at such parties, party-hoppers prefer to let their hair down and enjoy the whole night. “With trance music playing in the backdrop, party-hoppers have a mind-altering experience under the influence of drugs,” says DJ Sushein.
Such adult parties continue till wee hours of the morning and it is sometimes quite exhausting for the DJs. “The party-hoppers get too excited and are completely high after consuming drugs. It is tiring and I would rather prefer a normal party,” says Nagpal.
Shivani, a partygoer, feels such rave parties are over-hyped. “Far different from the filmi depiction of such dos, such parties can be fun too if you are not under the influence of drugs.”
Adds Salloli, “Often there are adult parties named Shiva-Parvati where trance music is played and couples jam together.”
And a word of caution comes from the experts. “Whether it’s a rave party or not, drugs are harmful and that’s why they are banned. You should just enjoy the party,” ends Nagpal.
