Ranbir’s grunge plunge a big hit
The teasers are on air and the cyber world is abuzz about Rockstar’s first look. Ranbir Kapoor with grungy locks, bandanas, a stale stubble and shades in place has the girls drooling over him. However, more than anything else it’s his qawwal cap and rockstar-meets-sufi-singer appearance that is garnering attention.
“The promos suggest that he is not playing a normal rockstar in this film. He has this brooding, melancholic aura about him which adds to the attraction of the film. And his attire perfectly complements his aggression,” says Neha Bhasin, a software developer.
Ranbir is looking rugged with neck chains and beaded wrist bands, playing the modern day version of Devdas, who is angry and dejected.
Ankan Sachdev, who styles shoots for glossies, says, “I quite like the look — unkempt, unshaven. It’s in complete contrast to Ranbir’s chocolaty image and he has carried it off so well. The USP is that many actors have tried to don the look but it didn’t register with the audience. The topi, long hair and rough edgy look is very new and a welcome change.”
His look falls under the category of desi grunge and he is seen in Patiala salwars, leather jackets with various types of headgear. The desi elements also had the ramp astir with qawwal topis and salwars at the recent fashion weeks. If Sabyasachi sent out models in kafiyah scarves, embroidered angrakhas topped with zardosi topis oozing the old world glamour, designer Arjun Khanna had model Inder Bajwa walk for him in a Patiala salwar.
Talking about the trends Ranbir’s look may usher in, the biggest experiment would be with the topi. “It could be a hit or a miss. It’s going to be a risk as youngsters are yet to see any rockstar in salwars and traditional topis. But if the film becomes a hit, the young brigade may get influenced like they did when Salman made the moustache uber cool in Dabangg,” says designing student Gayatri Bajaj.
