Recreating history

We cannot beat nostalgia, that is what filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt thinks, as he gears up to bring Aashiqui2 — a movie inspired by the musical blockbuster of the 90s — Aashiqui. While he thinks that the new movie that stars two young actors — Shradha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur — has the power to recreate the magic that the first film created, he is aware that the memories associated with that movie can’t be recreated.

“I recently met a young girl on a flight who told me that her parents met each other in a cinema hall while watching Aashiqui. And as the songs of the film topped the chartbusters, their love too blossomed,” said Bhatt during the press conference of the film in the capital.
However, he believes that the entire team has done a “wonderful job”. His trust relies in director Mohit Suri, who, he says, was very confident of the script from the beginning. “The best part was that he was very sure that he has to cast Shradha and Aditya in the lead. The confidence with which he said that these are his lead actors, I became sure of his choices,” said the director, who while introducing the film recalled how Gulshan Kumar (of T-series) with a child-like innocence came to him with the idea of making a musical.
“Hamari industry me bahot badi badi baatein karne wale bahot aate hain. But that was a different thing. Something struck between Gulshan and me and that chemistry is impossible to create again,” he said, as he introduced Gulshan’s son Bhushan Kumar who has collaborated with Bhatt for Aashiqui2. Bhatt is hopeful that the film will re-ignite the magic of love, as the young actors have tried to do their best.
Talking about the film Aditya says, “When you do a film like this, you want to make sure that you live up to the expectations of the people who are putting their creativity in it. Here, everyone believed in both of us. There was no pressure but only support from everybody which helped us give our best,” said Aditya for whom this is the first romantic venture and he wants it to become as successful as the first film.
“I was a kid when I watched the film and still I could feel the emotion of love. The benchmark has been set really high for us and I hope I have done justice to the role,” says Shradha.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
