Former VJ-turned-actress Sophiya Haque died yesterday in London after a prolonged illness. Sophiya was reportedly suffering from cancer. The multi-talented beauty was a popular VJ on Channel V in the 1990s. The former model, after her foray in films went to England, where she starred in West End productions like Bombay Dreams, The Far Pavilions, Wah Wah Girls.

People from the fashion industry who knew Sophiya expressed their shock at the 41-year-old’s sudden death. Ace photographer Atul Kasbekar, who worked with the model in early 2000, was shocked at the news of her death. Atul remembers her as a warm person and a thorough professional. “I have done many projects with her. I remember the editorial shoot for Elle magazine where the entire team had a good time together. It has been some time that we stopped being in touch, since she moved out of the country,” says Atul.
Model Nina Manuel, who has also been a VJ with Channel V, remembers her as a fun-loving and kind person. “When I was in Mumbai, I used to go to her house. We partied together a lot. She was a genuine human being, hardworking and always got along well with everybody. I remember at Channel V, she was really good to everyone and was a favourite of all,” she says.
Fashion designer Rina Dhaka says Sophiya walked for her for many shows and was an adventure-loving courageous woman. “Only yesterday, I found her boots at my place and I thought these need to be returned to her. She did a couple of shows with me in England and was simply remarkable,” says Rina.
Twitter came abuzz with posts on Sophiya’s death. Kabir Bedi tweeted: “Saddened by the passing of Sophiya Haque, friend & talented actress, who I acted with in “Far Pavilions”, London West End.”
Ranvir Shorey said, “She exuded love and warmth wherever she went. Heartbroken... RIP, Sophiya Haque.”
Nikhil Chinapa said, “RIP Sophiya Haque. She passed away in hospital in London, battling an illness. :(
Vishal Dadlani tweeted: “RIP Sophiya Haque, who along with Danny McGill + Nonie, started a revolution as India’s first VJ’s on MTV.They were proper megastars in ‘93”
Pooja Bhatt wrote: “Tragic news about Sophiya Haque. One of the most gorgeous women to have walked this planet... Shine on where-ever it is you now are luv...”
Tejaswini Kolhapure tweeted: “Sad very sad about #SophiyaHaque ... Don’t want to add how what when .. Guess news will run it now ! God bless her soul, too young to die !”
