Revisiting the fascinating world of epics
Sujata Bali Soni’s Revisiting the Epics, the one-hour theatrical production that was recently staged at Epicentre was a perfect blend of performance, dance and narrative. The play revisited three significant scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
“Many of us have grown up listening to and watching these stories. So we decided to revisit the spark of these epics once again. Through the play we tried to present a heady concoction of love, lust, power, revenge, and war,” says Sujata.
She adds, “The portrayal of the characters and depiction of the lesser-known folklore versions were stuffed with an interesting take, relevant to the modern times.” Contemporary dances in this narrative were based on the folk dance forms of Chhau and Kalaripayattu. The production saw performances by artistes Tom Alter, Charu Sharma, Bhavini Mishra and Chander Khanna.
Tom Alter, the renowned theatre actor who played a significant role of narration in the play says, “In 60 minutes we managed to watch two greatest epics of Indian history in a completely new light which according to me was the highlight of the production.”
