Rohit’s big switch

Rohit Shetty has been on a roll. If not rolling with laughter while judging Comedy Circus on the small screen, he has been churning out hit after hit on the big screen. His Golmaal series have spawned three superhit films, while this year, he also saw Singham achieve success. He wants to now take over the mantle of a mentor for the new UTV Bindaas show Big Switch.
“I have been doing Comedy Circus for a year and a half now. So I wanted to take a break and do something different. The concept of the show is really nice, and it’s different from what I have done before, so I took it up,” says Rohit, adding, “Coming from a middle-class family with middle class values, I have never been a rich spoilt brat. I know the kind of effort that goes into making it big in the industry. My aim is to bring about a reformation in the outlook of the contestants on the show.”
Although judging shows is nothing new for Rohit, he says this particular show will be completely different. “It’s not one of those shows where you just go and sit and judge. You have to be with the contestants throughout their journey, and that can get tough because very often, you are with them all day long. So while I am judging the show, it’s not like I’m sitting on a chair and giving comments. It’s a different ball game altogether,” he explained. “And since it’s not scripted, you never know what’s going to happen next and how you are going to deal with it. It’s not easy to mentor people.”
Apart from the show, Rohit is also working on his forthcoming film Bol Bachchan. He admits that balancing films with TV shows is quite an onerous task. “It becomes very hectic at times. Juggling between films and TV is a task indeed. There are times when I don’t sleep for upto 48 hours at a stretch,” he laments.
In fact, he adds, they have to travel to Jodhpur next for the film. “A recce is on at Jodhpur for the next schedule of the film. We will be completing it in March and releasing the film in July,” he adds.
Along with that, Rohit was also in news for his film Chennai Express for which he has apparently roped in superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
When quizzed the director on the same, he explained, “This film is still at the planning stage. It’s a film planned for next year end. So, it’s too early to say anything about it. Nothing is finalised right now. At the moment the focus is on Bol Bachchan and once it releases then we’ll shift energies to the other film.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
