Rolls-Royce’s sterling car
The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost is now considered the most expensive car in the world, having been insured for about $35 million in 2005. But while all 40/50 h.p. models from the Rolls-Royce stable were called Silver Ghosts, the company itself has initially assigned the moniker to one specific car from the series.
The 40/50 h.p. cars were all made in Manchester, until production shifted to Derby in 1908 and finally, Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1921. It was the car registered as AX 201 that was labeled Silver Ghost (other cars from the series were given other names).
But “Silver Ghost” so caught the fancy of the press at the time that they began calling every model in the line by the name.
Rolls-Royce never recognised the unofficial name for the models, and they finally did so only in 1925, by when their new iconic line — the Phantom — was ready.
