Royal croons winning tunes

She is a vagabond and has a style of her own. Generally spotted in her trademark pyjama and a long loose T-shirt is 22-year-old singer Jasleen Royal. Jasleen’s musical rendition of late Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s poem Panchi Ho Javan has recently bagged her the prestigious MTV Video Music Awards for her single number.

Sharing about her video song that emerged as the winner in the Best Indie Lyrics category, Royal says, “The video is shot at Hauz Khas village, Delhi’s hotspot and youth adda, which made it all the more relatable and popular among city youngsters.” The song-video competed with the works of Kailash Kher, Rabbi Shergill and Delhi-based band Indus Creed.
“It just happened that I was reading Jonathan Seagull by Richard Bach and at the same time my mother patiently explained to me the meaning of the poem Panchi Ho Javan by a famous Punjabi poet. That is how I connected the two works and came up with this video. The lyrics may be the winner, but I am glad people liked my musical version of it,” shares an elated Jasleen.
A B.Com (Hons) graduate from Hindu College, DU, Jasleen is like any other collegiate — random yet certain, humorous and appealing. “I shared space with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world such as Priyanka Chopra, A.R. Rahman and international rapper Tpain. This has to be one of my most thrilling moments,” she says.
As a one-member orchestra who can simultaneously work her magic with the mouth organ, guitar, tambourine, keyboard and vocals, Jasleen first made a mark in 2008 in the reality show, India’s Got Talent, where she reached the semi-finals.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
