Saina’s first slice of fame
Just like the diamonds in her ears and around the neck, the sparkle in badminton sensation Saina Nehwal’s eyes is hard to miss. The 22-year-old sportsperson is evidentally enjoying her first taste of superstardom.
As the whole country is still celebrating India’s maiden badminton medal at the Olympics, Saina said, “The scene has changed, I’ve become a star overnight. This would not have been possible without the strong support system I have. Seeing all the celebrations, I sometimes feel nervous, more so because so many people are looking up to me now. So the pressure to win all the time is predominant. It is a little tough but I want to handle it perfectly. I’m also enjoying it. There is no greater joy than celebrating my dream with my countrymen who have backed me unconditionally.”
Saina’s success was made sweeter with cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar heaping praise on the talented youngster.
Still gushing over Tendulkar’s compliments, Super Saina, who is excited about receiving her dream BMW from Tendulkar said, “Sachin is a wonderful person and he has motivated me to work harder. I’ll never forget the way he told me that he follows my success. He truly made me feel like a star. Now I want to do better for Sachin and the country.”
With success comes stories of Bollywood offers, but Saina was quick to point out her priorities.
“People know me as a badminton player and at this point in my career I don’t want to get into anything else. I want to stay focused on it, as for movies, we’ll think about it later,” said Saina.
Having missed out on the little pleasures of life in pursuit of excellence, Saina is catching up on lost time before getting back to the grind.
“For the past two weeks I have been eating all my favourite food like chocolate, ice cream and aloo parathas made by my mother and I’m simply loving it,” gushed Saina.
