Seeing the world with her heart
As the spotlight fell on Sabriye Tenberken at TEDx Forum dais at Technopark, curiosity got the better of the audience, though she has been well-known for exceptional service and achievements.
She? Really? Is this the German woman who was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for her work to empower the visually challenged? Is she the author of the best seller, My Path Leads to Tibet?
As Sabriye starts the talk, the doubts quietly disappeared. “Even after I turned blind at the age of 12, darkness never came,” says the 42-year old Sabriye, founder of International Institute of Social Entrepreneurs and Innovators, under Kanthari Foundation at Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram.
With her partner Paul Kronenberg, she works on helping people with a vision to make changes happen. “We are looking for people who are innovators and visionaries of ethical and social change,” she says.
At TEDx that served as a platform for eminent technologists, entrepreneurs and designers, she says that people have not been very encouraging, “They told me, ‘you are too small to make a change’.” Determined to prove them wrong, Sabriye continued with her work. “Kanthari is a perfect symbol of the new paradigm of leadership,” she adds.
