Setting an example
Catherine Zeta-Jones has come through a trial by fire to emerge stronger than ever. Husband Michael Douglas, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, is now free of it. Then when she was at the centre of unwanted attention after the news about her having bipolar disorder was leaked to the press, she took it in stride, saying that her example could help others deal with it better.
She is now looking forward to the release of her next film, Broken City, starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe.
In an email interview Catherine says, “The role that I am playing is that of a politician’s wife who wants to get out of the situation she’s in knowing that her husband’s dealings and actions will destroy many people’s lives, including her own.” It was a challenging role. “As an actress I always try to reinvent myself. Working with Allen (Hughes) has been a great experience; he knows exactly what he wants out of me and how I should portray my character in front of the audience. It was definitely a bit emotionally draining for me. This was the only challenge that I faced.”
She has played pivotal roles in films, such as Chicago, Playing for Keeps, Ocean’s Twelve, Rock of Ages, making her characters look as real as possible. “I always go through the entire script and analyse what is expected of the role. A lot of research and rehearsal goes into adding life to the reel time situations. Also, I interact with a lot of people and take their inputs on my performance. This really helps me a lot. Rest, it is all spontaneous,” Catherine says.
She has been written about for her roles but her personal life has come unnecessarily under the scanner. She mentioned in an interview that she never wanted to be the ‘poster girl’ for bipolar disorder. “I have stopped going online as I don’t want any negativity around me. People keep saying things and they will continue doing that. At times it’s painful, but then it is for you to apply filters wherever necessary,” she points out wisely.
Catherine, a huge Bollywood fan, says, “I love Bollywood, and given a chance, would like to do Indian movies since I have musical experience.”
The actress will next be seen in Red 2 and Side Effects. “And if given a chance, I would love to act in some European movies,” she says.
