Shine on New Year’s eve

The countdown to the biggest party of the year has begun and with the end of the decade it really can’t get any better. Make-up experts say that going by the themes and trends that have been spotted throughout the year, the look for New Year’s eve is one that’s full of drama with an ounce of sexiness to it. “It is all about the smokey eyes, bold lips and everything that’s full of drama. Just this once, ditch the nude, innocent look. It’s time to bring in the new year and there’s no better way to do this than with a huge bang and melting into the wallpaper isn’t an option, one needs to stand out from the crowd,” says Shruti Naithani, a skincare consultant and advisor with a premium brand.
Stylists unanimously pick the smokey eyes look for New Year’s eve. “When you are getting dressed for any party, the first thing that one needs to concentrate on is the eyes because that’s what holds any look together. Coming to an occasion like NYE, the sultry look is the perfect choice as this is a great option for the evening or night,” explains Ameena Qureshi, a senior make-up artiste and trainer, “Instead of the usual black for the smokey eyes consider a different palette of colours like blue, brown or even purple, which is very in this season. The thumb rule while picking a colour is to pick something that reflects the shade of your outfits.”
“To get the eyes right, the simple trick is to use a jet black eyeliner to outline your eyes, fill the lids with any colour you like and finish off with coats of mascara, this is basic, but a very tried and trusted method and works on just about anyone,” shares Shruti.
And to add that touch of drama, “Even if you’re using basic colours, apply some gold or silver dust this gives a very dramatic finish to any simple look. Even using basic make-up like eyeliner, kohl and a touch of eyeshadow in dramatic colours can make a huge difference. Go for shades like berry, purple, etc. which go well with the Indian skin tone at night,” adds Shruti.
If the eyes are the primary focus, allow the rest of the face to complement it. “Use a cheek tint, forget the blush because it ends up becoming way too patchy and also go in for a lip stain that won’t run and fade away by the time the party is over. If you’re not too confident about what to do for the lips just apply something in a nude shade and top off with a coat of gloss to get kissable lips,” says Ameena.
When it comes to the hair, simplicity is the key, “Get a blow dry done or even simple waves if you want to leave your hair loose. Otherwise, tie it up into a ponytail as this looks very chic. If you’re wearing a dress you can even go in for a loose, messy bun with tendrils framing your face,” advises Ameena.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
