Shiny, happy people

Nude face days are passé. Everyone needs something to cheer up this summer. The bare-face-bold-look has been an unfailing make-up combination on runways for the last couple of years, more so because it translates so easily off the catwalk.

But this time it’s the year of the neons. How about berry bitten pout? As colours get more saturated, the intensity is way higher.

Shine on
Neha Khanna, beauty advisor, AVON India who has worked with celebrities like Rati Agnihotri, Zarine Khan, Saba Ali Khan, Sonalika Sahay besides others says neon makeup is trending this summer. Taking cues from a brighter colour palette the season is packed in shades of fuchsia, aquamarine, orange and green. You may wonder how such makeup can be used in your daily life. When neon makeup is toned down and tailored, it can be made wearable with a few tips and tricks.

Bright ideas
To carry your neon makeup with panache, highlight a key feature of the face keeping the rest basic. For vibrant lips, just swipe a couple of coats of mascara and a plain black liner. You can either go minimalist or bold by playing around. To make a bold you-cannot-miss-me look, opt for satin or matte lip shades that not only stay perky but also remain even and muted all day. This lets your eyes do the talking. If eye makeup is all you want, then go easy on cheeks and lips with peach or a shade of soft pink.
While creating a dramatic look, choose to go with a bright eye shade and work it with three to four shades of the same palette starting with the lightest on the inner corner of the eye, working it outwards with each followed by a darker shade. But if you chose to go for a soft neon wash, opt for gloss in high shine shades of coral, orange and hot pink. Ensure that your eyes, cheeks and lips are of the same group to avoid colour excess or jarring.

Naughty neons
For a bright neon effect, reach out for matte shades that appear bright and for light application opt for mineral shades that provide shine and sparkle along with lightest of washes. Complete the look with a vibrant shade of enamel on your nails neon green, cobalt blue, shocking pink or canary yellow. And if you’re in the mood to get adventurous, try UV colours that glow in the dark. The effect is sure to be explosive.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
