It’s the Dussehra-Diwali time and if the gifting traditions are to be followed, then men will go bankrupt this season! With the festivities kick-starting in all its fervour, its men who are out there shopping and not women!

Buying gifts for their loved ones, you spot them everywhere, at gadget stores, commercial areas to the high-end luxury malls. A few might look amused but most of them look like they have lost their way. But do men really like the festive shopping? Or is it more of a female trait that they have adapted?
“I love to spend on my family during this season and no woman forces me into it. In fact, women in my family help me shop on time (laughs). Otherwise like all men I am lazy and take my own time,” says actor Vivian Dsena of Madhubala fame. Jewellery, gadgets, clothes or cash, the list goes on and the wallet keeps getting lighter burning a hole in the pocket.
“I completely agree. This is the time when I roll-out cash! My parents had come to see me with my cousin so I had to buy gifts for all of them. Apart from that I had to send cash with them for my sister. Though I felt like I was bankrupt, at the end of the day I was happy to treat my family,” says model Arry Dabas. But not all men can go wrong with their calculations, there are those who play it safe with their partners and give full credit to ‘her’ to manage the economics. “I love to spend — it’s a choice and my habit. But fortunately, my wife Sanjeeda and my mother both are careful and keep a tab on my spending. Despite the shops luring me, I am smart enough to shop right, thanks to them,” says actor Aamir Ali.
In fact, many husbands say it’s easy when the lady helps them deal with the budget. That’s how managing finances becomes a cakewalk. “My wife and I manage together so I am really never stressed,” says Sharath Sareen, a pilates trainer. Whatever they say or admit, men concur, this is the time to shop. “Shopping is not enforced. It is by choice and I love to shop for the women in my family especially my mother and sister,” says actor Karan Tacker.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
