Sibal showers praise on Nitish
After AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Congressman and Union minister Kapil Sibal too seems to be showering praise on Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for the development work done in his state. But Mr Sibal, a top lawyer that he is, used legal jargon to praise Mr Kumar. He brought the Supreme Court into the picture in his jovial
comment recently during his meeting with the chief minister. “Your style is such that you should have been a lawyer in the Supreme Court,” Mr Sibal said in response to Mr Kumar’s suggestion of setting up a Central University in Champaran district of Bihar instead of the state capital. Mr Kumar, interestingly, is an engineer by training, even as his archrival and RJD chief Lalu Prasad is a lawyer by training. Interestingly, none of the two ever used their professional skills!
Kalmadi’s arrest rings alarm bells
Arrested Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi’s transformation from a sports czar to an accused, has created jitters in the political circles. The CBI’s move to arrest Kalmadi in connection with the CWG scam, has forced certain politicians, who are under the scanner of the agency in connection with irregularities committed in Games-related contracts, to be concerned about their fate. There are several other Games-related contracts awarded by Delhi government, Union Sports Ministry, Delhi Development Authority and New Delhi Municipal Council, that are being probed by the CBI and other central agencies. Role of certain politicians in the contracts are also being probed by the agencies. Who will be next after Kalmadi is now only a matter of time and conjecture.
PC’s speeches brushed up in translation
Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s recent election campaign in West Bengal was a success even though the CPI(M) led Left Front attacked him for his criticism of the Marxist government in the state.
Sources disclosed that though the home minister used the English language to address the public meetings in West Midnapore district and other places, West Midnapore Congress president Swapan Dube simultaneously translated the home minister’s speeches in Bengali which drew a resounding applause from the audience.
This was thanks to the “emotive” translation done by Mr Dube of the “straightforward” speech of Mr Chidambaram.
A source also claimed that while Mr Chidambaram was criticising the Maoists, Mr Dube replaced “Maoists” with “Marxists” in certain portions of his translation which won further applause from the audiences at the election rallies!
Goel attacks CWG scamsters
Very often BJP leaders are asked about their contribution to check corruption when their party was in power at the Centre. Recently, BJP leader Vijay Goel, who was attacking Congress on the CWG scam issue, was asked that while his party has taken the moral high ground on the corruption issue why didn’t his party do anything to check corruption during the BJP-led NDA regime. Mr Goel’s reply was, “Zaroor lete par hum to abhi bahar baithe hain (we would have taken action if we had continued at the Centre).”
