Simple to sexy in seconds

A girl-next-door like Katrina Kaif turning into one of the hottest item girls in the industry has left many fans breathless. Why, even Katy Perry’s new ladylike avatar has caught the fancy of fans across the globe. A great figure and enviable wardrobe apart, according to fashion experts what helps these women wear so many looks with ease is the fact that they use make-up effectively to transform themselves.
Elaborating more on this trend of using make-up as the main accessory, Natasha Kagalwala, a senior make-up technician with a premium brand, says, “If you look at fashionistas these days, they don’t stick to any particular look. In fact, it keeps changing according to the occasion, time of day, etc.”
She goes on to explain, “For example, in Tees Maar Khan itself in one of the songs Katrina Kaif looks like the sweet, girl-next-door and in the Sheila ki jawani number she sizzles. The secret is the way they’ve used the make-up to showcase two different looks. For the former, it is more of pink and blush shades and in the latter it is a more subtle, understated look with a flawless complexion and heavily-done eyes.”
Flitting from a sexy siren to a simple plain Jane isn’t that difficult, say make-up artistes. “It is all about using a few clever strokes of the brush,” shares Payal Singhal, chief technical consultant of a luxury brand. The basics — flawless skin, grooming, etc. — need to be in place first.
“The advantage with Indian skin is that women have more options from the colour palette. So to do a simple look — go with the natural, rosy tones. For a beachy look like Deepika Padukone’s in Break ke Baad, one needs more of a bronzer and just a touch of kohl. To go sultry, one can use a touch of shimmer by incorporating metallic shades, double up the mascara and finish off the lips with a touch of gloss to emphasise that pout,” she says.
Make-up experts throw light on a simple idea to shift from one look to another in minutes. “Play with colours and textures, that’s the difference between a good-looking person and stunner. And yes, carry a well-equipped make-up kit all the time with essentials like eye make-up, a good foundation and a blush.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
