Sisterhood in melody

It’s not just any “sister act” for the three young musicians from Delhi University, who also happen to be sisters in real life and members of an all-girl band —Minute of Decay. Recently, when these girls performed at Kailash Colony’s Cosmo Live Bar, the crowd couldn’t agree more.

The sisters Worshon Muivah (lead vocal and guitarist), Singchon Muivah (bassist) and Thotyaphy Muivah (percussionist) come from Manipur and they formed the band a year ago. Worshon, the eldest of the three sisters, says, “We are five siblings in total and all of us are into music. We love to play different instruments and when our parents saw our inclination towards music, they suggested we have our own band.”
The girls, who practice around two hours everyday, call themselves ‘classic fusion rock band’ as most of their performances are influenced by bands like Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett, Mr. Big, Beatles, CCR, Simon and Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, etc.
Singchon, the bass guitarist of the band, says, “Music comes from our heart. For us it’s not like a struggle to survive, it’s more to do with joy. We don’t know whether we are serious or not, all we know is that we are enjoying every moment of what we do.”
To which, Thotyaphy, adds, “Whatever we do and have achieved is not because we are awesome, but it’s the love from our Lord, and we completely leave the future of our band in His hands. We do talk about our band’s future and we pray and hope that we make a mark in this field.”
However, in a city like Delhi, where women feel objectified and threatened even in public places, the girls stay confident and brave, while being alert about security. Worshon mentions, “We are three girls in the band accompanied by four guys behind the stage. They take care of the sound, equipment and most importantly our security, so we feel quite safe when the whole team is around. We would never do a gig just by ourselves (only girls) in Delhi; if we have to, we do only selective gigs. Security is our prime concern in the city.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
