Solo splendour

This season the ‘one-tone look’ could well be your ticket to the hall of fashion fame. Designers are prescribing a uniform colour code as the big thing of the moment. And the trendy chorus is — make your style statement in a single dose of colour, splashing it all over, from top to bottom.
“It’s ruling every fashion savvy wardrobe in town, and can bestow a statement defining look if exhibited in the right manner,” declares designer Heena Malhotra on the solo shade style. She says, “This is basically a more refined yet definitive version of the monochromatic look which can be played with many hues. Clean and definitive cuts, less ruffles and lady-like fits add more appeal to a single-toned look. To mellow down the overall brightness, add a little bling through silver jewellery or a clutch.”
Designer Jyoti Sharma terms the trend as ‘fabulous’ but her endorsement comes with a warning. “There is no real rule out there against this, as it all boils down to how comfortable you are with what you wear. When it comes to a solid-coloured bright ensemble, a bag and a pair of shoes in either black or nude shade are safest, as those colours work to break down a bright colour’s strength.” The detailing goes as, “Peplum accents are getting popular with each passing day. Consider a pleated dress with a fitted bodice to instantly create a sleek silhouette. Top off the apparel with a pair of patent leather pumps. A sleeveless dress is the ideal way to discreetly show off the one-tone look. Cocktail dresses bring a slightly shorter cut. These formal dresses will turn heads.”
Designer Varruna Kapoor of Vvakalma label also calls ‘monochromes’ as a sure shot winner. “It draws emphasis on the silhouette of the garment and its construction. Prints and contrast focus on each piece but monochrome is about the entire look put together. Wear them in full-length jumpsuits, and even in short dresses. This style looks very classy in a single piece ensemble. Trousers and blouse of the same colour also look elegant. A formal suit can be anybody’s choice. Keep it all in the same hue, and avoid shade variations. Play with textures, surface ornamentation,” she advises.
Designer Mini Bindra charts out a slightly different route. She prefers, “Same shade but different tones of the same, and tone on tone embroideries in Indian apparel for a classic and sophisticated look. Of course colours do matter.”
They matter a lot actually, one-tone look is all about colour play on the silhouette, points out Heera, adding, “Blacks, whites, reds, nudes, blues, beiges, plums, onions and chestnuts are some shades which work well.”
Jyoti Sharma loves relying on the glamour of classic black. “A complete black ensemble, from head to toe,” she visualises. Looking for more options, she finds, “Neutral shades are safe. Electric colours that are bursting this season like a shock wave of yellow, a vibrant wave of blue or a hot pink hue in a statement piece like a peplum dress or one piece romper, are highly recommended.” To break the monotony, accessorise with a neck piece and zesty wedges.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
