Songs for girl power
The capital has woken up to many issues related to the girl child after the recent gangrape case. Since music has the power to move hearts, music band Euphoria has dedicated their new song, Main Hoon…, based on women empowerment, to the cause.
Palash Sen, the lead vocalist of the band, says that the song emphasises on the importance of women in the society. The video of the song features women from different walks of life, including his mom, sister and daughter besides a lot of other girls and the chorus has been given by the girls of Western Music Society, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, who even feature in the video.
“It’s women who form the backbone of our lives and our society. It’s them who through their thought process make or break the society. This song just reaffirms that,” he says about the song that would be an anthem for “Kudiyan di Lohri”, a new initiative by 92.7 Big FM in association with NGO Plan India.
The singer is really angry at the way our society has turned out to be. He says that it’s a time when girls should have very strong opinions and the power to change everything. “It’s not that everything has happened just because men think in a particular manner. These things also happen because women have been subservient for a long time. They have allowed them to be exploited. Every woman should learn to speak up,” he says.
And surprisingly, when we tell him that many musicians and filmmakers are being blamed for objectifying women, he doesn’t defend them. Rather, he feels that women have been objectified in Bollywood and music videos and that has had an effect on the society. “Everything, whether good or bad, has an impact. If a young girl sees that people are talking about a particular jalebi bai, she would try to ape her. Now, an entire generation of little girls would grow up aping somebody like that, also creating an image in the mind of boys that girls are supposed to be like that,” he says and adds that a lot of people think that girls don’t have a mind of their own, “this song is also an initiative to show that a girl can be more than just a showpiece.”
Kamakshi Khanna, a college student from LSR, who has lent her voice to the song’s chorus, says that the song celebrates womanhood. “We have been tolerant for a long time now. It’s time to stand up and take charge,” she says.
