Soon-to-be mommies set the ramp on fireSoon-to-be mommies set the ramp on fire

The capital is not new to the concept of fashion shows. But pregnant women walking the ramp in style is something not seen before. Celebrating motherhood, the recent fashion event put up by Fortis La Femme — Great Expectations 2011, had the crowds cheering aloud. The pageant had pregnant women in Delhi all dressed up and strutting their stuff on the catwalk to celebrate the best phase of their lives.
Talking about their first time on the ramp, anxious soon-to-be mothers could not have asked for a better opportunity. Said Alisha, a participant, “When I got to know about the pageant, my instant reaction was, ‘I can’t miss it.’ So what if we can’t be a part of Miss India or World, this title is no less. It’s like walking the ramp with my baby.”
Some expecting mothers couldn’t contain their excitement as they braced themselves to walk the ramp for the first time in their lives. “I’ve never walked the ramp before and when I saw so many pregnant women around me willing to take on the challenge, it felt more exciting. I left my job a month back and have been at home. So this was a great change,” said Neil, who won the title for best hair.
And it wasn’t about winning for most of these mothers. It was the thrill of walking the ramp, feeling blessed and telling the world how proud they are to be mothers soon that got most of them on the ramp. Said a contestant, “A woman looks the most beautiful when she’s pregnant. So what better way to celebrate this time of our lives than on the ramp for a beauty pageant? I am not here to win, but just to celebrate my happiness with others.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
