Thanks to multinational trade, we are in times when learning a new language not only gives you an edge over the rest but assures a stable career. Some of our prestigious universities are offering interesting language courses to students.

And the days of learning just French or German seem to be over as Spanish, Chinese and Korean are much in demand.
Sujeet Roy, education counsellor, clarifies that the best available jobs are those of interpreters. “Chinese, Spanish and Korean are in high demand. And if you are a graduate in any of these languages or even do a diploma, chances are that you’ll find some exciting options just after graduation, or even after school. The salaries can go up to Rs 2 lakh per month. Interpreters are required everywhere and they earn well. I did a PG in Spanish and got some great opportunities soon after college,” he says.
Spanish and German are much in demand in the hospitality sector. Looking from the career point of view, where you learn the language from counts a lot. “Also, companies prefer people who have done longer duration courses than just short-duration diplomas. Another factor is learning the language from a teacher of that native land. For instance, we don’t have any Indian teachers, our staff is from different countries who teach their respective languages. This is an important factor that companies take into consideration while hiring,” says Sanjeev Rawat, director, Langma International School of Languages.
Schools are also offering various language courses other than just French or German. “Japanese and Chinese are becoming really popular and assure good job opportunities, especially in embassy jobs. Interestingly, you can work with government bodies from various countries if you master a language like Chinese or Spanish,” says Geetika Anand, CBSE counsellor.
Laura Benito from Instituto Hispania suggests that any foreign language can fetch students excellent jobs just after graduation. Stressing on Spanish as the most popular language, she says, “Earlier only BPOs wanted students who speak fluent Spanish but now there are plenty of options to pick from in MNCs and the financial sector. And even someone who doesn’t speak very fluent Spanish can expect a salary upto Rs 25k. If you master the language you can even earn `50k per month. The demand for Spanish is huge in India today.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
