A spiritual retreat

Every nook and corner of Vedanta teacher Nishi Singh’s house reflect how yoga is an intrinsic part of her life. Being a spiritual at heart, she likes the flow of positive energy in a house and the vibes in her house attest this.
She says that in the last 11 years she has spent in the house, she has broken and mended different areas and developed various arches on her own, just to give the house a perfect look.
Her efforts are visible right at the entrance with a Zen garden that was set up just a few months ago. “I believe a lot in the Zen theory. In fact, even other areas have been done keeping that in mind,” she says.
Just like the entrance, the living area on the ground floor has a serene atmosphere. Nishi’s love for colours is reflected in the various paintings that adorn the walls of the room. “I love paintings. They add so much life and colour to an area,” she says and adds that while she has works of many artists, Nupur Kundu’s art appeals to her strongly. One corner here has a stained glass reflecting the five elements of the Universe.
On the same floor, there’s a meditation room, expectedly Nishi’s favourite place. “This is the room where I meditate and take yoga classes. I also conduct a monthly Shiva chant session in this room,” she says and adds that the flowery curtains and light coming in through the windows help in the free flow of energy here.
And when we thought the house was mainly about divine forces, there was a surprise — a Dolce and Gabbana lounge in the basement. Done up with contemporary and chic furniture, the lounge reflects Nishi’s love for style. “But there’s a lot of ‘me’ here as well,” she says informing us about her love for animals and how because of that she never buys a leather product. “Every piece of furniture in my house, including this lounge, is a non-leather product,” she says.
The lounge, divided into sections, has a sitting area and a bar. Nishi has kept in mind the comfort of people visiting her. “I have tried to create an inviting space that keeps the guests at ease,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
