Splash of colour

Take a look at your make-up kit and you’ll notice that it’s the pink lip colours and neutral eye shadows that are used often. Make-up experts believe that Indian women tend to stick to classic colours and that’s just the way it has been for generations. Now, with the focus on looking unique, it’s all about using colours to add more depth to your look.
As always, it’s the eyes that can help you carry off any kind of look. “The eyes offer the best platform to experiment with. If you’re the kind who sticks to the usual black eye pencil, then go in for a navy blue or grey to start with. Begin using eye shadow in your everyday make-up. Eye shadows are easy to apply and can instantly perk up your look. Choose colours like purple, indigo or even metallic shades which work well during the night,” says Shruti Naithani, a skincare consultant and advisor with a premium brand.
She adds that using mascara when you use eye shadow is an absolute must because it helps to enhance the impact of the colour. Combine hues like blue and yellow or pink and green to create a futuristic effect.
The one colour that experts unanimously vote for the lips is coral — according to them, this feminine hue goes well with Indian skin and it can be worn along with a variety of other shades too. “Red is one colour that will never go out of fashion but often women who wear red lipstick think they shouldn’t use any other shade. That’s not true this hue combined with metallic shades gives a very funky effect. Apart from this, you could try browns or pinkish brown, depending on your undertone. If you want to appear dressed down then go in for a neutral or even a light peach, which will give you a softer effect,” says Nilofer Hasam, a make-up artiste.
Blushers are synonymous with pink, but Nilofer reasons that one can look beyond this natural colour too. “Go in for earthy tones or a hint of orange, depending on your complexion. If you want, you can skip the blush altogether and apply bronzer or a metallic-hued shimmer powder on your face and neck for an unusual tint.”
Vinita Goria, a nail artist and manicurist, believes that these days nails are getting funkier and more colourful and it’s best to take a plunge right into the trend. “Dress up your nails in a palette of colours right from neon green to an eye-popping canary yellow — it’s all very hot these days. But for those who want to play it safe, go in for interesting nail art patterns to add pizzazz to your look,” she advises.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
