A spooky scarefest
It is an irony that every person associated with upcoming Bollywood flick Ek Thi Daayan does not believe in the supernatural, but they all have worked hard to make this film as convincing as possible. At the recent press conference held at PVR BlueO, the star cast including Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin, Huma Qureshi and producers Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor admitted that they do not believe in the supernatural and are ready to impress the audience with a purely commercial film.
“Being an actor, we don’t have to believe in everything we do, right! Similarly, I don’t believe in supernatural,” says Huma about her role in Ek Thi Daayan. The role of Tamara excited her to take up the project, her fourth outing in Bollywood. “I never wanted to do a certain kind of cinema. I always wanted to be a part of movies that are fun and I myself would love watching as an audience. When I read the story of Ek Thi Daayan, I knew I wanted to be part of this film. The story is great, the idea is fabulous, and the people working on it are great. These were my reasons to pick up this film. And everything about the film is different. There is no bhoot or ghost. But there is always a chilling feeling of impending doom all the time. One keeps waiting for what will happen next,” adds Huma.
Kalki Koechlin, another face of the multi-starrer, says, “We have not seen many supernatural films in India, and here we were working on an unusual concept.” She adds that the audience will see her in a different avatar in Ek Thi Daayan. “The character of Lisa Dutt is happy and glamorous, something slightly different from what I have done so far. It was very appealing to me. Plus the script is so well written, Kannan Iyer is a very good director, and the characters are complete in themselves. It is always nice when you feel that you are as much a part of the story as everyone else is,” say Kalki about working with so many actors.
The lead actor, Emraan Hashmi, shared that he grew up watching horror films from the age of seven. “When kids of my age would watch cartoons, I watched horror films. I have seen all of them, the famous Ramsay brother productions including Pyasi Chudail, Purana Mandir and found them very entertaining. The last horror film I watched was Mama, and was actually impressed with it,” shares Emraan, one of the actors to break the mould by starring in his third project related to the supernatural.
Producer Vishal Bhardwaj added that the concept of supernatural is picking up in Bollywood. “Ek Thi Daayan is a fictional story based on a story written by Konkona’s (Sen Sharma) father and I had been wanting to make a movie on this. However, the time is right now, as I believe supernatural films are doing extremely well. Rather, the genre is doing well since the past 5-6 years,” ends Vishal.
