Sports frat lauds MP Sachin’s new resolve
After Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha this week, he opened his new innings with a great stroke.
After the swearing-in ceremony, the cricketer announced that he will not only help cricket, but other sports as well. When the God of cricket himself showed support for other sports, expectations from different corners were bound to arise. The question remains if he will act quickly, or it is best to wait and watch?
Cricket expert Ayaz Memon is eagerly waiting for Sachin to open a debate in the Parliament. “Sachin is embarking on a new field, and the way he has performed in his cricket career, I am sure he is going to do equally well in the Parliament,” says Ayaz. Asked if Sachin’s quiet nature could be a problem for his role in Parliament, he dismisses the thought. “He is going to break all stereotypes and be vocal. Like the way you saw that 16-year-old understand, smile and play, he is going to do just the same in Rajya Sabha,” he says.
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra echoes Memon’s views when he says, “Though politics may not be Sachin’s expertise, I am sure he is going to take it up responsibly. He made his intentions (of bringing up sports) clear on the very first day and I feel it is going to make an impact, but may be in some time though. He is going to give his 100 percent.”
While expectations are on the rise, cricket commentator Charu Sharma suggests people to take it slow. “Sachin has certain qualities which make him stand out. But if you ask me if I see him performing really well in the Rajya Sabha, I have my reservations. I still see him as a cricketer who thinks before every game. I see him doing the same in Rajya Sabha. For the first two years, he may sit, watch, listen and observe, it is only after this that he will make his gradual progression. But, being the person that he is, he may not take up many issues directly. Sachin is really not like an activist leader who is going to spark debates.”
Ayaz too feels it would be wise to keep expectations at a moderate level. “People should not pile too many expectations on him. He is not a dictator who is going to pass a law!”
Supporting him, Aakash feels, “Whatever he has said till date is dissected and scrutinised by many people. Don’t except him to be an activist and take up things against any associations.”
Despite many reservations, chess player Tania Sachdev is optimistic. “He is a powerful personality and people will listen to what he says. He had actively supported other sports people when they succeeded and showed his support on Twitter. It’s a good sign for Indian sports.”
