Straight from the ‘art’
It pays to follow your dream. And Bengalurean artist Aishwaryan K reiterates this point. This 24-year-old, who specialises in an uncommon art form called print making, is the only Indian to have been chosen for the ongoing Lessedra Mini Print 2010 exhibition held in Bulgaria. “Print making is not a popular pick since it is tedious to pursue.
One has to constantly be in search of studios that rent out etching presses (since it’s too expensive to own one yourself). And the process of print making is time consuming. Hence, most artists who have specialised in it, tend to drop it somewhere down the line. But I will never be one of them. I love it too much to give it up. There are 572 people from all over the world at the Lessedra event, and I feel that my passion for this has earned me a place there,” says Aishwaryan, who holds a post diploma in print making.
His two works (made using the dry point technique) are on display at the Lessedra Gallery. “I am a youngster and wanted to work with a theme that the youth can identify with. Most of us wear T-shirts with funky slogans printed on them. My works display two T-shirts. One bears a slogan ‘I am not selfish… I just want everything’ — an expression of ambition. The other one has the slogan ‘There is an angel inside whom I am constantly shocking’ which speaks of how at times, circumstances force us to do things we normally wouldn’t do,” says Aishwaryan who derives inspiration from the works of artists like JMS Mani, Sheela Gowda and Anish Kapoor.
Ask him about the prospects that young artists in the country have in today’s times, and, “Things have opened up for artists. But there is so much competition prevalent. You need to keep the fraternity posted on the shows you’ve had, through social networking sites. You need to be heard if not seen, to be recognised,” he winks.
