Students feel unsafe in college campus
College campus is one place where you can spend hours without worrying about your security. But the place may not be so safe after all. At least it was not so for a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University, who was recently waylaid by an unidentified man inside the campus, who fled with her purse.
If this could happen in a campus like JNU, which is always a difficult territory to enter unless you’re a student, what do students have to say about security in their colleges?
Suyash Shukla, a NIFT student, tells us, “There are guards at the main gate of the campus and there are CCTV cameras too. But the problem is that this isn’t enough. It’s easy for outsiders to get into the college premises. Often we get our friends in too.”
And this has long been a major concern for girls as there have been times when boys from other colleges hit on them making the campus quite unsafe.
Says Sonali Gupta, a DU student, “We have cops all over our college, but that doesn’t really stop these men in big cars from circling the campus and many pass lewd comments. Most of them belong to rich families and know nothing will happen to them. In fact, some time back I saw a few boys consuming alcohol in the car close to college.”
However, there are many areas where cops can’t always be present. “Men in cars often slow down when it’s dark. They pass comments and often try and grab you. Girls get stalked and avoid going out alone when it gets dark. Streetlights do not work, which adds to our fears. But you can’t really help it. I think Delhi is unsafe in many ways,” says a hosteler from JNU.
