He may be one of the most sought-after singers in the Hindi film industry for over a decade now, but not many know that Sukhwinder Singh actually started out as a lyricist. The A.R. Rahman protégé, who rose to fame with Chhaiyya Chhaiyya from the film Dil Se, began his career by penning the lyrics of Thaiyya Thaiyya from the same film.
What the singer values the most in his professional and personal life is friendship. “When two creative people are also best friends, the results are bound to be special. That’s the reason I work so well with Rahman, Vishal Bharadwaj and Gulzar.” The singer, who has sung the most number of songs for Shah Rukh Khan, says he shares a very special equation with the superstar. Sukhwinder’s forthcoming projects include Zanjeer and Kaanchi.
High from the success of Raanjhanaa, Sukhwinder is now preparing for his overseas tour with Rahman. “We’ll be going to Sydney and a few other places. It’s after many years that we’ll be touring together. I am really looking forward to it.” Another project he is really kicked about is Music Circus that he plans to launch soon. “It’s a musical band of sorts that operates opera style. It comprises about 70-80 people. We are planning to launch around October and will be touring across the country, performing live concerts, not just in urban centers, but small towns and villages as well. We have musicians from Morocco, Russia, Middle East and Mexico among other countries. The concept is unlike anything that’s been done here before,” he says.
Speaking of the concept of reality shows, Sukhwinder says, “I am in talks with my friend Gajendra Singh about a reality show with an entirely new concept. No tamasha, only pure music.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
