Sweet nothings
Grenadine (grenadine syrup) is a red, strong syrup made from pomegranates. It is a favourite among fruit syrups, and is used in many cocktails not only for sweetening, but also to give them a red colour. Grenadine is most popular through its role in classics like Tequila Sunrise or Sea Breeze. It is characterized by a flavour that is both tart and sweet. It can also be made from red currants.
While most people opt for buying bottles of Grenadine, you can make it at home too. Use four pomegranates to make about two cups of pomegranate syrup.
After removing the seeds, process with food processor knife blade. Simmer pulp with a quarter cup honey over low heat for three minutes. Stir well and then strain to remove seeds. Just to up the tartness you can add a few drops of limejuice before stirring the syrup. Not only does grenadine add the right amount of zest to your drink but it also gives it the unmistakably lovely colour.
