Sweet song of success
Bollywood singer Shilpa Rao has made her presence felt in Bollywood, after struggling for a few years. She is basking in the glory of her latest chartbusters Marmarziyan from Lootera and Subanallah from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. The popular singer was in the city for a musical performance to help People for Animals raise funds for animal welfare.
“I used to sing with my father in Jamshedpur. Once Shankar Mahadevan heard me and asked me to come to Mumbai. In the beginning, I did ad jingles to sustain myself and then people started listening to my songs, starting with Saiyaan Re from Salaam-e-Ishq. There is a lot of competition in the industry but talent will surely be noticed,” says Shilpa.
The singer has worked with the likes of AR Rahman and Shankar Mahadevan as well as with the younger musical directors like Vishal-Shekhar and Amit Trivedi. “There is so much to learn from all of them. The veterans Rahman sir, Gulzarji and Shankar Ehsaan Loy treat every project of theirs as if it is their first. The younger lot is experimental and make you feel ‘at home’,” she says.
As most of her colleagues from the industry are associated with judging reality shows, would she also be seen doing something similar in the near future? “I have been a part of an episode of a popular reality show and performed for Coke Studio. But now I am content with playback projects,” she asserts.
Her upcoming projects include Gulaab Gang and Hrithik-Katrina starrer Bang Bang.
