Take it with a pinch of salt
It is probably the most important ingredient in your food and you simply can’t do without it. Like it or not, most of the doctors advise to cut down on salt to curtail obesity, hypertension and heart problems. But now, a recent study has revealed that cutting down on salt content won’t prevent the chances of a
stroke or heart attack. In fact, it found that cutting back on salt can actually raise the likelihood of death in some patients with accute heart problems.
The theory has thrown many off guard about their medical know-how, but experts feel there’s no reason to panic yet. Dr Sunita Dube, a nutritionist believes that restricting salt intake prevents retention problems. “Normally, human body requires around 2500 mg of salt everyday. This recent study about salt intake being good, is not yet proven and the research is still going on,” she says.
Given that Indian cuisine is a rich and fatty affair of oily ingredients, foodies have welcomed this study. Aditya Garg, a research analyst and a food enthusiast says, “I simply can’t have boiled vegetables for dinner without salt just because my blood pressure acts up. But on a serious note I can control a little.”
Dube seconds the rues of patients who find it hard to cut down on salt intake. “They feel sick when asked to not have salt or reduce the intake. It becomes difficult to make them understand,” she says.
