Testing times
The country’s film fraternity and fans got a jolt on Tuesday morning as the news of Bollywood starlet Jiah Khan committing suicide in her Juhu flat in Mumbai trickled in. The Ghajini actor, who had relocated from London to Mumbai, was apparently depressed because of a career that was going nowhere and she also had relationship issues.
However, the fact remains that Jiah’s problems were not unique. Many stars and superstars have gone through lean patches and have battled depression. The trick, they say, is to have a support system, like one’s family, to fall back on. A strong survival instinct also helps.
For example, one would have thought that actor Monica Bedi’s career was over given her jail sentence and her links with the underworld. She has, however, bounced back and today has her hands full with projects.
“I am thankful to God for giving me the strength to come through my testing times. It is also because of my parents that I have been able to leave the grey episodes of my life behind. It was their love, blessings and support which pulled me through,” says Monica. “Ending this precious life is no solution at all. As human beings we should always try to tread on the right path. I was sure I would pass with flying colours because I knew I was a victim of circumstances. I am currently doing the serial Saraswatichandra and enjoying it to the fullest.” She adds, “Life is worth enjoying and we need to handle depression and our shortcomings and not give into any such situations.”
Reality star Rahul Mahajan, meanwhile had to fight demons of a different kind. He has, however, managed to put the brutal murder of his father behind him.
