Theatre is still Adil’s first love
You can take out Adil Hussain from theatre. But you cannot take theatre out of him. Though the actor has critics going gaga over his performances in films like Life Of Pi, Agent Vinod, English Vinglish and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Adil says that theatre will always remain close to his heart.
He believes that film industry is just an infant in front of theatre. “It’s just been born and still growing while theatre has been around for years. People tell me that I am graduating with film acting but one cannot really graduate in acting by working in films. Theatre is the real acting classroom,” says Adil at the reading session of Piu Kundu’s book, Faraway Music held in the city recently.
The actor, who continues to be active in theatre and loves to read on mysticism and Sufism in his free time says he is waiting to come across a script that can challenge the actor in him. “Most of the scripts that I have read recently were shallow. I have come across a few scripts with complex and layered characters and I am excited about playing these roles. But unfortunately, Bollywood doesn’t pay attention to the characterisation,” he says. Adil insists that he wants to take up only challenging roles. One of these will see him in his upcoming film Lessons In Forgetting, based on a book by Anita Nair by the same name, set for April release.
