Three loves of Shenaz’s life

“It took me a long time to figure out what I was meant to do,” says Shenaz Treasurywala who has juggled several roles in her career. From a VJ, host, actress to a writer and producer — she has managed to build quite an enviable portfolio.

But Shenaz is still aching for more. “‘What will I be when I grow up’ is a question I keep asking myself everyday. Will I ever grow up? I hope not. Ever,” she laughs.
But if she were to pick one professional role out of the many she has played, she would choose the actor. “Since I have been working a lot as an actor lately, I see myself as an actor of late,” says Shenaz who is currently shooting for a film titled Main Aur Mr Right.
“But I do feel my main talent remains in hosting and writing. It all comes under the big umbrella of storytelling and that’s what I’m meant to be in this life — a storyteller,” she adds.
As far as her career is concerned, Shenaz is a destiny’s child. VJ-ing was not something she set out to do, she admits.
“It happened out of sheer luck,” she says. And so did acting, when Ishq Vishq director Ken Ghosh thought of casting Shenaz after spotting her at a nightclub.
“The one thing I always believed I was good at was writing. I graduated in journalism and screenplay writing. I’ve always loved to tell stories. I always wanted to marry the three loves of my life — hosting shows, travelling and writing. So I produced my own travel show on Discovery USA. This for me, till today, is something I am the most proud of,” she says.
For someone who never planned to be an actor, Shenaz seems to have done pretty well for herself. Besides Bollywood, she successfully crossed over and bagged a role in American sitcom One Life To Live, the longest running soap of the country. “My character Rama Patel is a sassy, hot, femme fatale — very different from the roles I play in India. She became popular overnight, especially among the African Americans. I’m stopped most on the streets of Harlem and Bronx,” she says.
Having struck off nearly all hats in showbiz, Shenaz wants to try out stand up comedy next. “I’ve written out a solo show that I tried on stage in New York. It was well received and I am aching to do more of that,” she says. “I hope I can continue to keep hosting, acting and writing for the US and India. I like very much that I am working without borders,” she adds.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
