In throes of a boxing revolution
A revival of sorts is sweeping through the Indian boxing scene these days. Thanks to international boxing stars like Vijender Singh, Akhil Kumar and Dingko Singh among others, things are definitely looking up.
Coaches report an increase in the number of applicants wishing to sign up and learn the tricks of the trade, while applications at local tournaments have also gone up.
Amit Lalwani, who runs a prominent boxing and kickboxing academy, says the fitness craze may have something to do with it. “Of course, the presence of boxers who’re doing well internationally helps, as people have role models to look up to. But it’s mainly the fitness craze that is sweeping the nation that we can thank for the sport’s renaissance as well,” Lalwani says. “Boxing and martial arts are an excellent way of keeping fit. They are great as exercise methods as well. Boxing was considered dangerous by most people at one point of time, but that is no longer true.”
Among the most prominent of these youngsters are the Darvesh brothers. Owais and Moin Darvesh of Christ Church School, Byculla are two young boxers who have been receiving great reviews for their performances at the junior categories.
“We are just proud we are getting encouragement from the authorities. The recognition and encouragement will help us go a long way,” said elder brother Moin.
