Time to DU it in style

Picture this — two girls are standing next to each other in a queue to submit their admission forms and the conversation between them is not about their choice of subject or college, but about where they shop for clothes. Welcome to the admission season in Delhi University, when aspirants fresh out of their school uniforms turn up on campus in their trendiest best.
The attention they pay to the list of colleges is well matched by their attention to what they themselves and their peers are wearing. Style is a hot topic with all out to make a fashion statement.
Noticeable in the crowd of DU aspirants are girls in long skirts. “Comfortable, covered and cute,” says Prachi Sinha who has made long skirts a part of her wardrobe. “Length does not matter, you can beat the heat equally with a long skirt in nice cotton. Skirts need not go over the knee every time,” says Prachi, who feels long skirts are a welcome change. “Shraddha Kapoor wore a lot of long skirts in Aashiqui 2. Long skirts teamed with tank tops are definitely in these days,” she says.
Devanshi Tyagi too prefers long skirts as these can be worn to places where short clothes don’t work. “You can’t wear shorts to each and every place and knowing Delhi streets, it is very unsafe. Jeans are a big no-no in this weather. So long skirts are a good option and as it is, Aashiqui 2 made them really famous in the campus,” says Devanshi.
Though Deepika Padukone’s bespectacled look from Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani proved a big hit, it’s her ‘short shorts’ which got a thumbs up from youngsters. It’s ruling the DU streets with every second girl seen wearing hot pants. “Though hot pants aren’t exactly new, Deepika made them really popular. She sports a new style variant in every movie she acts in,” says Gunjan Thakral from Chandigarh.
“On my very first outing after reaching Delhi, I shopped for hot pants in different colours. In any case, this is the ultimate comfort wear in Delhi summer,” she adds.
Ashon, from Nagaland, agrees with Gunjan and stocked her wardrobe with a variety of shorts before she came to Delhi. “It is easy to get these trendy clothes back home and we all know what Delhi summer is going to be like, so I shopped for shorts from Nagaland,” says Ashon.
Ashenle Kemp observes that colourful clothes and floral prints are in this season. “We are noticing a lot of floral prints and have already picked up some from places like Sarojini Nagar. They are very summery and add colour,” says Ashenle who simply loves divided skirts. “These (divided skirts) are a good option if you are not in the mood to wear pants. They are flowy and comfortable,” she says.
Casual is the most popular style mantra for guys on campus. “Jeans and T-shirts are staples for us. However, since we all want to be comfortable, shorts have become a good option. Unlike earlier times, boys our age do not shy away from coming to college in shorts,” says Karanbir who combined white shorts with off-white T-shirt for his campus visit.
“Please don’t wear shoes in summer. Casual slippers, even bathroom chappals, work better in this hot weather,” he advises his peers.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
