A toast to Amarula
A South African native would tell you that Amarula could make an elephant drunk. A quaint mix of the extract of the marula fruit and cream, this South African liqueur is the seventh most requested liqueur worldwide, according to a survey.
Amarula is the flagship brand of South African liqueur giant Distell which rose to fame in 2010 as the official sponsor of the Fifa World Cup. Last year it bagged the gold medal at London’s 2012 International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Patrons describe its taste as “inimitable” and “complex”. Bartenders say that people like to drink it straight. Amarula contains 17 per cent alcohol, and its sweetness means that some consume it as dessert.
Amarula’s connection with elephants cannot be ignored and the brand is known for its elephant conservation efforts.
