Token of love we share

Riddhima and Ranbir

Riddhima and Ranbir

Sisters always count their Rakhi gifts and brothers are often pulled up for not meeting their demands. At times a small box of chocolates would do, and sometimes a jewel is not enough. But behind this brother-sister argument, there lies the strong bond both siblings share.

And the reality is that sisters value their relationship with their brothers much more than material gifts. Gifts just give them a reason to strengthen their bonds.
Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, actor Ranbir Kapoor’s sister says that more than a present, she values her bonding with Ranbir. “I share a special relationship with Ranbir, and the occasion of Rakhi is not the only day to express this. I remember the chocolates and the little things he would give me on Rakhi when we were kids, but more than the materialistic gifts, our bond has always remained way above this and much more special for both of us. Still if you ask me, I cherish the watch that Ranbir gifted me on Rakhi after I got married,” she says.
Theatre person and writer Sohaila Kapur is waiting to tie a Rakhi on brother Shekhar Kapoor after many years. “It’s been many years since I tied a Rakhi on Shekhar as he was never in town, but this time we are going to be together. He is in Delhi to attend the Osians festival and has a screening of his movie that day. I have told him no matter how many people are going to be there, I am going to get him many sweets and tie a Rakhi in front of everyone. So, I guess, it is going to be a special occasion. But when it comes to gifts, the most memorable gift he gave me was a return ticket to Canada a few years ago. He very sweetly told me ‘it’s going to be on me’!” she said.
Architect Mohit Gujral and sister Raseel Ansal have done away with exchanging gifts many years ago, but they always look forward to family get-togethers every Rakhi. “I don’t wait for a Rakhi gift as such, what I wait for is the whole family to get together. Rakhi is one day when three generations of our family — my father and his sibling, me and my sibling and our kids are together in the same house. It’s like a big family gathering, which we look forward to every year. And the moments spent with my brother and sister are better gifts than any monetary presents,” she exclaims.
On the other hand, Nikhita Tandon is awaiting her “big gift” from brother Rahil as he has left behind some goodies for her. “This Rakhi is going to be special for me. I am going to get the most memorable gift from Rahil. My brother is not in town, but before going, he left a huge packet with my mother to be given to me on Rakhi day. On previous occasions, he would always give me gifts that my parents would pay for, but now he specified that the gift he has left for me is from his own hard earned money. I know it’s probably going to be cash and a bag (which he knew I liked). I feel, I’ll always, always remember it,” she says smiling.

Sanjay Bhansali:
Bela has been my support. We’ve seen the highs and lows together. She is one of those few people who know the real me. Despite being grown up, we still have our share of fights. But I completely adore and love her.

Bela Seghal:
The best gift Sanjay can ever give me is his support. He has been a father, a friend and a brother. We’ve faced happiness and pain together. He is younger to me, but is as protective as a big brother.

Tusshar Kapoor:
Ekta is a very expensive sister. Her likes and dislikes are very strong. She hasn’t yet told me what she wants as a gift. I remember telling her that this year I’ve given you a chunk of dates for her films. That should be enough. I’m yet to get a reaction from her, though on a serious note, I simply love her.

Ekta Kapoor:
My film Kya Super Cool Hai Hum is doing great business. And that is the best gift that Tusshar could’ve given me. I’m overtly protective about my brother. And vice versa. Materialistic things don’t make me happy. He has always been my back bone and that makes me the person, a successful producer and a proud sister.

Sajid Khan:
What can I gift Farah that she already doesn’t have? My sister almost gave up choreography to become a full time director. But I am lucky that she agrees to choreography songs only for me. I don't think we’ve grown up at all. We’re like little kids.

Farah Khan:
I’m waiting for the day when kanjoos Sajid will give me a gift. On a serious note, there is a bond between us that is unshakable. I don’t need one day to celebrate his presence in my life. I hope my son Czar too becomes a responsible and caring brother like Sajid.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
