Top cop’s exposé gets reel-ity check

A gold medallist in law, he knows the rules of the game much better than anyone else. His book not just cost him his job, but ex-IPS officer Y.P. Singh’s Carnage by Angels on corrupt officials also changed the course of his life in more ways than one.
“The only bad period in my life was the one in service. After the book was released, they blocked my salary and troubled me. My provident fund hasn’t been given to me for the past seven years. It’s my own money. After the release of a true book, this is how an honest officer is harassed,” he says candidly.
But the book was definitely much-appreciated by many, which led to its cinematic rebirth. “People loved the book as it talked about corruption in a realistic way. With the release of Kya Yahi Sach Hai, the corruption at all levels will be exposed to the general public. It’s a realistic take on the functioning of the police system of our country,” says Singh.
Although there have been movies which brought to fore the dark side of the policing world, Singh says the previous attempts were “frivolous”. “Movies made on police in the last few years are frivolous. They focus more on action and violence. But this is an emotional film, which deals with bureaucratic apathy in India,” he says further.
The movie is releasing on December 30, and deals with subjects which haven’t really been touched before. “We have talked about how the posting and transfer industry flourishes, how the dalals and power brokers get involved and the role home ministry plays in these deals,” says Singh.
He tells us how the film focuses on the loneliness of an honest officer. Sharing what makes this one different, Singh shares, “All films earlier have shown the strength of the police, but our film talks about the authority of the police. So the police doesn’t work by strength, they work by authority.”
Exposing the inner facets of the police departments, we wonder if Singh’s script had troubles in getting the nods from those in authority.
“We are very strong on law because we’re not merely filmmakers. I’ve single handedly taken care of many important cases in the recent past so I know law a lot more. No one can dare to ban my film. Had it been any other Bollywood director, they would’ve removed the film completely,” he says.
About the changes he seeks in the police system, he says we require honest people at the right places.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
