Tress therapy
With the New Year come resolutions on keeping fit doing the rounds. A recent survey showed that other than the common reasons cited by most people, hair care was one of the major barriers to working out for some.
A lot of men and women sometimes take it easy on the exercise front in the gym or in the pool, or at various other fitness classes, after they have done their hair to keep their styles intact sometimes even failing to meet their physical activity guidelines.

Najeeb Ur Rehman, hair expert from Schwarzkopf Professional feels a great hairstyle speaks volumes about a person's personal style statement. When we exercise, be it jogging, swimming or playing sports, our body releases sweat and grease especially on the scalp. Daily cleansing in lukewarm to cold water with a suitable shampoo like colour save for coloured hair, repair for bonded hair is essential. It helps remove dirt and oil from the roots leaving the hair refreshed and nourished. A thorough conditioning is required after every wash followed by a light hair serum applied on towel dried hair with fingers for frizz free soft and lustrous hair. If you are exercising daily, you should aim to completely eliminate heat drying as part of your routine. High or regular heat use can cause severe damage to hair which is not apparent initially.
Hair and now
For the vast majority, it would also be beneficial to add some oil to your hair after washing. A high frequency of wetting/washing hair leads to excess removal of oil. The oil on the surface of hair helps to maintain moisture. A monthly hairspa with exfoliation also helps in getting rid of accumulated build up.
Tressed to perfection
Styles like an easy twist help keep the hair in place and thus minimise damage. Make a low pony and divide the tail into two sections. Twist them to form a soft chignon or a tight pony tail — Slick hair back into a tight pony at your crown and secure with a clear ponytail elastic. Even a simple French braid is a great hairstyle to sport during exercising. It results in minimum sweat and oil build up. If you do not wish to braid or twist your hair, it is still possible to exercise with free hair. Simply aim to keep your hair up either by holding it up in a ponytail or a bun, pinning it up or placing it into 1/2 large cornrows/French braids. If your hair shrinks heavily when wet, you may want to consider not wearing it free unless it is short as knotting and tangling is highly likely o occur. Don’t age your scalp and hair while creating a younger body!
